Stabilizing and Scaling Spobik: From Technical Takeover to High Performance
Learn how we turned a slow and low-performing e-commerce website into a fast, intuitive, and secure revenue-generating tool.
Context and Challenge
Our client, WeSports Group, is a leading Scandinavian group of brands in sports equipment, which buys and develops companies in categories such as cycling, fitness, hockey, and outdoor sports. When they acquired another one of their brands, Spobik, they also inherited e-commerce entities from this site. However, the client faced several challenges:
- The site was unstable and could go down
- Some functionality didn’t work properly even when the site was live
- Product updates were unreliable
- Any technical changes depended on an external vendor
As a result:
- Sales were being lost
- User experience suffered
- Teams had to rely on manual work
- The system was difficult to control
Client’s Objectives
The client approached us to regain control and make the platform reliable and stable. The key goals for the project were:
- Stabilize the site and prevent downtime
- Improve performance
- Remove vendor lock-in
- Update outdated technologies
- Make the system easier to manage
- Support further growth and expansion

Project Overview
The global goal of this project was to make the newly acquired e-commerce websites a part of the WeSports ecosystem, with a clearly established structure, efficient performance, and strong e-commerce metrics.
Infrastructure and stability
We migrated the platform to Amazon Web Services to improve reliability, security, and performance. This step eliminated random failures and made the system more stable.
Platform upgrade
Instead of rebuilding everything from scratch, we moved from Magento 1 to OpenMage. The client preserved the existing functionality while getting ongoing updates and better security.
Product catalog improvements
Previously, catalog updates could affect the entire system and cause failures. Forbytes experts introduced incremental indexing, so only updated products are processed instead of the whole catalog. It made updates faster and more reliable.
Tech stack modernization
We replaced outdated components with modern technologies that support scalability and better performance. The system can now handle traffic spikes and scale down when needed without affecting stability.
Data import and operations
Our team implemented new import mechanisms that allow the team to update large volumes of product data quickly and without manual intervention.
Payments and integrations
Migration from Klarna to Svea payments improved the checkout process. We also implemented and improved integrations with external services, including email providers.

Security improvements
Forbytes added additional security layers to filter out bot traffic and reduce system load.
Business Expansion
While stabilizing the platform, we also helped the client launch additional storefronts:
- Spobik
- Cykelkraft
- Cykelkraft Finland
Qualitative results:
The platform became stable and predictable in day-to-day operations.
- No unexpected downtime
- Faster and more consistent performance
- Reliable product updates
- Regular security updates
- Reduced manual work for the team
- Full technical control without dependency on external vendors
